Ingredients:
For the Turkey Burgers:
1 lb ground turkey
1 whole finely chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
1 tablespoon neutral oil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon paprika
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For the Sauce:
1 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cucumber, grated and excess moisture squeezed out
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill (or 1 teaspoon dried dill)
1 clove garlic, minced
½ Cup Diced Tomatoes
Salt and pepper to taste
For Serving:
4 whole wheat burger buns
Lettuce leaves
Sliced red onions
Instructions:
Caramelize the onions:
Add oil to a medium sauce pan
Cook on medium-low heat for 25 - 35 minutes until well browned but not burnt.
Allow to cool completely before proceeding.
2. Prepare the Turkey Burgers:
In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, caramelized onion, minced garlic, crumbled feta cheese and Spices. Mix until well combined but don’t overmix.
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties.
Preheat a grill or stovetop skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and the patties are fully cooked through.
2. Prepare the Sauce:
In a bowl, combine the yogurt, grated cucumber, lemon juice, dill, minced garlic, diced tomatoes, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
Adjust seasoning to taste and chill in the refrigerator until ready to use.
3. Assemble the Burgers:
Toast the burger buns if desired.
Spread a generous amount of sauce on the bottom half of each bun.
Top with a turkey burger patty.
Add lettuce, and red onion slices.
Spread more sauce on the top bun and place it on top of the burger.
4. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the Gyro Turkey Burgers immediately with your favorite side dishes, such as sweet potato fries or a fresh salad.
